ABOUT THE SHOW

Hawaii’s 5-O design competition was created in 2001 by AIGA Honolulu and Hawaii's printers to celebrate graphic design excellence. As the competition has evolved to include web, motion and app design, still only 50 winners are chosen. Eligible projects are judged for craft, concept, and aesthetic achievement as determined by our nationally-recognized judges.

2017 marks our 10th biennial 5-O Show. Over the years, 5-O winners have come to represent excellence in design in Hawaii. It highlights local talent in the fields of design as well as print production, photography, illustration and copywriting.

The winning work for the 2015-2017 period will be revealed at the Award Gala on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Prince Waikiki. It will be a night to remember. May the best designs win.

It Pays to Join

Non-members pay more for entries than members. Members of AIGA show a commitment to the local creative community and are investing in their own personal and professional development. If you are serious about being a contributing member of the local design industry, please consider joining today.  Memberships start as low as $50 per year.

HOW TO ENTER

All entries are processed through our online entry system. Gather information for your projects BEFORE you log in to the entry system. Unfortunately, you will not be able to log in and out of the entry system to build or edit your entries. We suggest you type up the information in a separate document (prep sheet available below) and paste it into the online form. This will make the entry process go smoothly and will prevent you from losing data if the system times out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many of the 50 awards will be websites?

The number of awards given per category will be at the discretion of the judges. They may choose to give 10 awards for web and 40 for other categories, or they may choose to give 40 awards for web and 10 for other categories.

rule-1.png

If the winners are not chosen by category, why do we have to enter by category?

Different kinds of entries have different submission requirements. That is the only reason they are separated in the entry system. Printed project entries must provide actual samples of printed pieces in order to be properly judged. Websites have no physical submission requirements, but require that a URL be entered. Ultimately, the judges will decide which 50 entries are the best, regardless of category.

rule-1.png

Can I enter a ________?

The Hawaii 5-O show is meant to celebrate the best of design in Hawaii, interpreted as anything designed for a client for commercial use. It must incorporate graphic design, specifically some combination of typography and images. We realize this is open-ended, but we believe that limiting the definition of “design” to print, environmental or web projects is a dated concept. If we did not specifically list the type of project you would like to enter, you may enter it under whatever category allows you to provide us with visuals/links/samples we need to have your project judged fairly. If we determine that your submission to be ineligible due to this ambiguity, we will remove it from the competition and refund your entry fee.
