THE DESIGN PROBLEM

What began as a Chinatown street fair in 2008 has evolved to become one of the biggest outdoor music festivals in the state. Part concert event, part food fair, part club crawl, part costume extravaganza, this Halloween affair now encompasses The Hawaii State Art Museum (HISAM) campus, Aloha Tower Marketplace Concert Stage, all of the bars/restaurants in Chinatown.

The challenges included appealing to the varied audiences (from local families with kids to hardcore music festival afficionados from across the nation), to charting the 30+ events over several locales, to explaining the ever-expanding footprint of the festival's sprawl. "And make it local."

THE DESIGN SOLUTION

The new design of the Hallowbaloo mascot melds vintage hula girl charm with Bride of Frankenstein spookiness, while maintaining a family-friendly vibe.

The responsive website design includes several "Easter Eggs" to encourage exploration and surprise-and-delight: the flashing lightning bolts; the mini-trolley icon that zips between the locations; the marching-ants trolley path; the giant type-chewing mouth; it all adds up to one spooktacular site that teases the fun and excitement of the actual event.
